After spending a few days in Hualien, we headed southward to Taitung County. While in Taitung, we were hosted by Taitung High School, where we learned a great deal about Taiwan's history and culture. Taitung has a very large population of aboriginal people and has preserved the ancient aboriginal culture of Taiwan. One of the highlights of our school visit was having the opportunity to learn more about this unique culture; Taitung High School has a special class to learn about aboriginal culture. While at the school, we made crafts, tried on clothing, learned songs, and played traditional instruments. On our last day at the school, we even participated in chemistry experiments! We all appreciate that the school truly welcomed us as their own students.
Another highlight was having another home stay experience staying at our new friends' homes. One of my favorite moments was walking in a park and singing the US and Taiwanese national anthems together.
On our final day in eastern Taiwan, we traveled to a very small town called Chi Shang. While there, we participated in a volunteer activity during which we visited elderly people who are living alone. Together, we sang songs, chatted, and drank tea. As it turns out, Chi Shang is a place of natural beauty. When we were visiting, it happened to be the season that the fields of mustard plants are blooming, creating a majestic scenery that seemed to be out of a movie.
We had a truly unforgettable week in eastern Taiwan. Check out our pictures and videos below to learn more about this week of exploring Taiwan's natural and cultural history.

In late January, NSLI-Y Taiwan students took a week-long trip to the eastern Taiwan towns of Hualien and Taitung. Eastern Taiwan is known for its beautiful mountainous terrain, particularly that of Taroko National Park. After a long (but beautiful) train ride, our first stop was Hualien, where the students went boating at Li Yu Lake, hiked through the mountains, and walked along the beach. While in Hualien, we stayed in a small cottage near the ocean, and the students had an opportunity to cook a meal together. After a trip to the nearby grocery store, the students prepared a delicious meal of "Italy-noodles" (意大利面), or, as we know it, spaghetti. Check out the photos and videos below to see more about our trip!

This month we will have two opportunities to travel to Tainan for school visits. Tainan, located near Kaohsiung in the southwest, is a former capital of Taiwan and was the first site to be invaded by the Dutch in the early 17th century. Due to its unique history and importance over time, Tainan is known as a city with many unique historical sites, including early western forts, ancient temples, and battlegrounds. Tainan is also widely recognized for its special snacks sold at Taiwan's largest night market.
During our trip to Tainan this past weekend, we visited Kuen Shan Senior High School. The school was very welcoming, and took us on a two-day adventure through the city, visiting all of the key historical sites. During those two days, the students learned a great deal about Taiwan's rich history. Some of the highlights from our trip include singing karaoke, visiting temples from the 17th century, exploring Taiwan's first Confucian Temple, experiencing Taiwan's largest night market, and visiting the Museum of Taiwanese History.
The students had a great time in Taiwan with their new friends. Check out the final video below to hear their thoughts about the visit and their appreciation of the school's efforts! Ben and his new friend play piano Ben Plays Piano as Friends Sing Along

This past Friday, the American Institute in Taiwan Branch Chief Mr. Gary Oba welcomed the NSLI-Y students to his home for a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner. The delicious meal, complete with turkey, sweet potato casserole, and pumpkin pie, was greatly appreciated by all the students who otherwise would not have been able to eat such a uniquely American meal in Taiwan. Accompanied by their host families, the students explained the traditions of Thanksgiving to Taiwanese people celebrating the holiday for the first time.

This past weekend, the NSLI-Y students traveled to the town of Miao Li, in northwestern Taiwan. While in Miao Li, the students visited Miao Li Wen Hua Elementary School, explored historical sites, shopped in traditional markets, made lei tea, ate all sorts of strawberry products (including strawberry sausage), and went to a Hakka culture museum. To have an authentic experience, the students were all hosted by local families who took them to hot springs, tea houses, and night markets. Known for its surrounding mountain peaks, Miao Li's scenery was truly majestic. By the end of the trip, multiple students happily declared, "When I retire, I want to move to Miao Li!"

This past Friday, the NSLI-Y students had another opportunity to travel to a nearby school for language and culture exchange! This time we were very excited to travel to Doris' school: Feng-Hsin Senior High School.
While at the school, the students participated in many different activities! After eating a delicious lunch, the students were led by their new friends on a campus tour. The NSLI-Y students hadn't realized Taiwan's high schools could be this large and beautiful! The campus tour even included a visit to the school's very impressive art gallery!
After taking a look at the campus, the students returned to the classroom and gave self introductions. Afterwards, the afternoon's main activity began: learning about Taiwan's traditional holidays! Their Feng-Hsin classmates took on the role of teacher, and shared their cultural traditions with the NSLI-Y students.
The students didn't just have cultural exchange, they also were able to improve their language skills! The best way to learn a new language is, of course, by playing a game! Together, the students played a very competitive vocabulary game.
The students were quite tired at the end of this day packed with many rewarding activities!

For our first trip outside of Kaohsiung, we traveled to the nearby Hakka town of Meinong. On the way to Meinong, we stopped in Qishan, where we visited Taiwan’s largest Confucian temple and ate the local specialty—banana cream puffs. After eating our unique and delicious snack, we headed toward Meinong. Founded during the 17th century, Meinong was originally inhabited by people of the Hakka ethnicity who emigrated from mainland China beginning in the 1600s. Today, about 90% of its 40,000 residents are Hakka.
With more than 300 years of history, the town has developed its own culture, traditions, and products. The most iconic products are Meinong’s paper umbrellas and clay pottery. While in Meinong, the NSLI-Y students were taught by a local artisan and had the opportunity to make clay bowls and paint paper umbrellas. Besides Meinong handicrafts, the students also indulged in some of the local delicacies, namely “ban tiao.” Ban tiao are noodles made of a rice-based liquid that is poured into square pans, steamed over boiling water, and finally cut into long strips. After a long day of making artwork and trying new foods, we made a final stop at Meinong’s East Gate, one of the oldest standing structures in the town. As we prepared to leave, the students were already planning their next trip to this majestic town of endless fields surrounded by mountain peaks.

This past Friday marked the students' first school visit in Taiwan. Every few weeks, the NSLI-Y students will visit a school in Taiwan to engage in cultural and linguistic exchange with new Taiwanese friends. Their first visit was to Feng-Shan Vocational High School in Kaohsiung. After the students' introductions, the fun began! While at the high school, the students engaged in many activities, including cooking dumplings, learning how to make bubble tea, playing the Chinese yoyo, writing calligraphy, and enjoying a few songs by the school's orchestra! The school had such a great time hosting their new American friends that they made a commemorative video you can view here: Ben introduces his home town: Sonoma, California.
