In late November, the NSLI-Y students ventured to the rural Yanchao District of Kaohsiung. Their first stop on the trip was the Wu Ding Mud Volcanoes, where they had a lunch of the local specialty—chicken cooked in hot mud. After lunch, the students arrived in Jin Shan Village, population 400. The local farming cooperative took the students on a tour of all the highlights of their village, including the “Moon World” rock formations, the old village street lined with traditional houses more than 100 years old, and Taiwan’s “Golden Gate Bridge.” One of the most unique parts of the day was the opportunity to go into the fields and pick guava. After the tour, the students returned to the community center where a meal of 10 different dishes had been prepared for them. Once they had their fill of delicious local fare, the students lied down outside and gazed upward to the night sky full of stars. It was a wonderful, relaxing trip outside of the hustle and bustle of Kaohsiung city.
