The NSLIY 6 students have already been in Taiwan for more than three weeks, and things are in full swing!  In addition to choosing and starting their Wenzao classes, our ten students have also been busy with a monthly meeting, volunteering at the Tzu Chi Recycling Center, and a baseball game.

The students had their first monthly meeting with their Resident Director and Program Coordinator on Friday, September 19th.

After the meeting, the students traveled by bus to the Tzu Chi Recycling Center to do some community service.  There, a Tzu Chi volunteer showed the students how to sort different plastic bags and remove any labels and adhesives; these plastic bags would be made into blankets.  The students worked hard and even had spirited and friendly debates on various controversial issues such as climate change and overpopulation.  Our students certainly are curious and passionate, which makes them excellent NSLIY students and future global citizens!

After a day of hard work, the students were ready for some fun.  On Saturday, September 20th, they went to Chengqing Lake Baseball Stadium for the Kaohsiung Rhinos vs. New Taipei Brother Elephants game.  Although most of the students knew very little about baseball, they were excited to get a taste of Taiwan’s sports culture.  Unfortunately, due to the impending typhoon, the game was canceled!  The students, however, still got a tour of the stadium and were able to look out onto the field from their VIP seats.  Not even the rainy and windy weather could dampen the students’ enthusiasm and overall great experience.
