Why Do You Love Taiwan?

Hi everybody. I’m McKenzie. Now, I live in Taiwan. I’ve lived here for about seven months. I came to Taiwan, because the American government gave me a scholarship. When I found out I received this scholarship, I didn’t know anything about Taiwan, not even where Kaoshiung [the city I live in] was. Now I know where Kaoshiung is.  But at that time, I was really nervous, because I couldn’t really speak Chinese. I also didn’t understand people speaking Chinese. For the first three months, I was a little lonely in Kaohsiung, but I met a lot of fantastic friends. They helped me improve my Chinese. I also love to talk so that helped me improve a lot.

If you can’t speak a country’s language, it’s hard to make friends, therefore I practice my Chinese a lot. In Wenzao [the language school we study at], I have Chinese class everyday for two hours. I really loved my classmates last semester. We had Mexican, Japanese, American, and French people. Our teachers were also really awesome. During that time, I thought my Japanese classmate was hot. He couldn’t speak English, so I could practice my Chinese with him. In my other Wenzao classes, I met a lot of Taiwanese friends. They took me to night markets. Together, we talk and also speak foreign languages.

Now, I love my Taiwanese life. My Chinese has improved a lot, because I have a lot of good Taiwanese friends. I also like Taiwan, because their prices are cheap. If I want something, I can buy it. Taiwan also has tons of delicious teas; therefore I often buy tea. I like “Sugar-free, no-sugar green tea” or “Half-sugar milk tea”. Wenzao’s back gate has a lot of tasty food, and the train station near where I live also has a lot of foreign restaurants, including Thai and Mexican cuisine. It’s really delicious; I like it a lot. There’s also a juice store nearby. The employee there is pretty cute, so my friends and I like to buy their drinks.

During the weekends, I can go to the beach. Kaohsiung’s weather is great, so this February, I had my birthday party by the beach! This was my first beach birthday party. We took pictures, threw the Frisbee, and ate cupcakes. One moment we were speaking Chinese, the next moment we were speaking English.

My Chinese is getting better and better; therefore, I can talk to Taiwanese people. I’m happy. I miss America, but Taiwan is a good place to be. Taiwanese stuff is cheap and fun. I can speak Chinese, so I can meet boys. I enjoy my life!
